*The Yiddish word for diet is "diete"
Punch "bathroom scale" ("vashtsimer vog") into your search engine and 10,200,000 web sites appear. Plug in "weight loss" and you'll find 109,000,000 sites.
The bathroom in my S. Florida condo has a body fat monitor/scale which measures both weight and body fat, with an accuracy of +1/-1 percent. It can be used by anyone who weighs under 330 lbs. (150kg), and it's supported by medical research. The scale has a "zikorn" (memory): four persons only! It gives me an extra-large two-line display indicating numeric keypad, and I get accurate and quick body fat measurements in just seven seconds, using bioelectrical technology. Why that's faster than Jared Fogel can say "Sub-way, Sub-way, Sub-way." The scale is portable and I can take the hand held Body Logic with me anywhere. The "musey" (museum)? The restaurant? The theater? The Kravis Center? No way!
So, what the problem? My condo neighbor, a Canadian, tells me that Calgary residents are being asked to recycle their bathroom scales. A health group is challenging residents to weigh their self worth without their bathroom scales. "Der guf" (The body) Image Awareness Week committee staged a scale-trashing event to promote a Calgary-wide scale recycling program. They're not saying scales are "beyz" (evil); they're saying this is a way that people tend to measure their worth. Organizers said they weren't trying to reach people who need to lose weight for medical reasons. they wanted to free people from tying their body image to "kalt" (cold) hard numbers. One member of the Anti-Anorexia Anti-Bulimia League said that he stepped on the scale every chance he got.
Statistics show that approximately 70-80% of women in the "koledz" (college) age group are not comfortable with their bodies and wish to change at least one aspect of their outer selves.
For "seasoned" AARP women like me, I'll gladly give up the scale. However, I'll continue to invest time and money in Flat Tummy treatments, chocolate body treatments, Winter Remedy facials, and "maintenance" visits until the year 2015.
