Rabbi Shmuley is a spiritual leader, raconteur, author of 23 books, TV star ("Shalom in the Home"), and was a former spiritual adviser to the late Michael Jackson.
Talkers Magazine named Shmuley as one of
the 100 most important radio hosts in America. He was formerly rabbi
of Oxford
University.
Shown below is a Yiddish guide to Shmuley:
"aktsent" (accent)
Rabbi Shmuley has been described as
"Dr. Phil with a Yiddish accent."
"aparat shemevdik" (camera shy)
Joe Eskenazi (Jewishsf.com) writes, "For good or evil, he's [Shmuley] one
of the most
recognizable rabbis in the world, and
probably the least camera-shy.
"bar" (bar)
Shmuley asks, "Should young women go to
bars with female friends and try and meet
a guy?" His reply: "Come on. Do you want
to marry a husband whose principal
companion (bagleyter") is a Michelob Lite?"
"beyzbol" (baseball)
"Even when I go to a Yankees game, I take
my five daughters along with my older son.
True, they often don't know the names of
the players or even the score, but they know their father loves them and
hates being separated from them. There is a
special connection that daughters have
with their fathers that even a mother cannot replicate, which grants young
women a startling immunity from compromising themselves with jerks."
Shmuley quote, Jewsweek, 4/19/2004
"brust" (breast)
Fifteen-year-old 'Hannah Montana' star
Miley Cyrus is virtually topless on the cover
of Vanity Fair "jhurnal" (magazine). Disney
blames the magazines; the magazine says
that her parents and minders were there
throughout the Annie Leibowitz photo
shoot...
"Our daughters need to be protectred from
sexual exploitation. They need to hear that
they have a brain and not just a bust."
Shmuley quote
"bukh" (book)
Although Shmuley has penned many books,
some people still refer to him as the guy
who penned the controversial 1999 book,
"Kosher Sex," followed by "Kosher Adultery."
Cruises
Shmuley has hosted singles cruises off the
coast of Alaska.
"elfter" (11th)
"As far as the American Orthodox high
schools are concerned, when Moses came
down from Mount Sinai he brought with
him the 11th Commandment: Thou shalt
send thy high-school graduate to Israel."
Boteach quote, Jerusalem Post Internet
Edition
"faschlechta" (badly behaved)
"...there are no bad children, and no
deliberately bad parents--but that sometimes, despite the best of intentions
on both sides, there can be bad relation-
ships between parents and children."
Boteach quote, "10 Conversations You
Need to Have With Your Children"
"for gezunterhait" (travel in good health)
Shmuley drives a specially equipped
Airstream trailer (The Heal Mobile) to the home of a family in crisis.
(See "Shalom in the Home")
"genug" (enough/sufficient)
"genugik, nit" (insufficient)
"The vast majority of men who are unfaithful would never shoplift or steal
a
car. Rather, men cheat because, as Tiger
Woods accepted, they have a problem. They are broken inside - they
feel insecure
and unimportant - and think that having
women desire them will compensate. It's an
age-old lie that conquest, especially of a
sexual nature, will bring personal validation.
The feeling that enough is never enough,
the curse of insatiability, was something
I tried to impress upon Michael Jackson. I
saw him punishing himself constantly. When I asked him if he was proud
of Thriller, which had sold approximately 50
million albums, he told me yes, but not
really, because he had a post-it note on his
mirror in the bathroom that said 100
million. So that was the man whom Michael saw in the mirror, never
enough,
always having to succeed more."
Shmuley quote, "Tiger's Courageous
Confession," 2/20/10
"get" (divorce)
Rabbi Shmuley is the child of divorce. He
says he believes in keeping families intact
at almost any cost ("prayz").
"haldzn" (to hug)
"My daughters and sons, when they walk into the house, they have to give
me a hug
or kiss. I tell them, 'I don't care if the
president of the United States is waiting for
you.' I will stop whatever I'm doing and
wait for a hug and kiss."
"kritikirn" (to criticize)
Shmuley was once mildly criticized by a Jewish organization which was supposed
to
be hosting him for a lecture for having to
cancel on them because the lecture clashed
with his baby's bris..."It's time we got honest about our priorities."
Shmuley quote
L'Chaim (to life)
Shmuley points out that the Jewish toast,
"L'Chaim" means NOT "to life" as it is
commonly translated, but "to lives" in the
plural. "No one could live life by themselves. We all need
someone else. So
there's no point toasting life, because life
that is not shared is unlivable."
"malpe" (monkey)
"A child is not a circus monkey who has to
perform for their parents with grades...
that sort of excellence is often bought at a
price and many students who are outstanding in school suffer commensurately
in other areas of life."
Schmuley's Blog, June 20, 2006
"matone' (gift)
"The greatest gift a man gives his children
is to love their mother. By so doing, he imparts the lesson that
there are things
in life more glittering than gold and more
precious than rubies."
Shmuley quote
"menoyre"/"menorah"
"We in the Jewish community must do our
utmost to put public menorahs on display
at Chanukah time as the ultimate display of
religious freedom and as a sign of our equal share and pride in the blessing
that is America."
Shmuley quote, "613 Words,"

parents to nine children.
"meshuge" (crazy)

we take our kids out to shopping malls
rather than rivers, to the Multiplex
("der kino") rather than a lake ("ozere")."

"naygerikayt" (curiosity)
"Stop pushing for Straight A's. We are
killing our kids with straight A's. What's
far more important is intellectual curiosity.
I try to focus on inspiring my kids to be
interesting people."
Shmuley quote
"nief" (adultery)
Boteach says there are "dray" (three) types of adultery--mental adultery,
in which you
think about others; emotional adultery,
in which you begin to rely and confide in
others, and obviously, sexual adultery.
"nomen" (name)
Rabbi Boteach's name is pronounced
"Bo-ta-ach." For many, he's simply known
as "Shmuley."
"perfekt" (perfect)
Shmuley believes that one should not obsess over finding the perfect mate
because that partner will in fact become
perfect through the raising of a family,
the establishment of a "heym" and the
transformative act of "geshlekht" (sex).
"posl" (void)
Shmuley writes, "Husbands today seem
incapable of truly making their wives happy
("gliklekh") and many woman now look to
their children to fill the void in their lives
by an unfulfilling marriage."

have listened to recordings of the world's
greatest speeches on countless occasions

greatest speaker of the modern era was the
Rev. Martin Luther king, Jr."
Schmuley quote
"shvartza" (black person)
Shmuley wrote a column about how the
word "shvartza" must be retired forever
("oyf eybik"). "It is an insulting, offensive,
and derogatory term that has no place in the mouths of people committed
to ethics And since we Jews have a faith that demands the highest
moral standards, it
simply can never be part of our lexicon.
"redner" (speaker)
Shmuley once had a speaking engagement
where he discussed black-Jewish relations
with the Rev. Al Sharpton.
"taynen" (to argue)
In Boteach's book, "Kosher Sex," he writes
[about handling a difficult patch or argument in a marriage]: "Apologize
if need be, even if you're convinced that you're correct and they're wrong. Love
is
far more important ("vikhtik") than being
right. Lose the argument and win back
your spouse."
"zhurnal" (journal)
Excerpts of "Kosher Sex" appeared in
Playboy Magazine.
"zilzl" (humiliation)
"American culture grows more crass by the
day. One of the most successful American TV shows is The Apprentice,
starring Donald
Trump, a man loaded with money, but bankrupt of class. The highlight
of the
show is when Trump humiliates potential
employees by barking at them, 'You're
fired!'"
