The late Whitney Houston sang, "I believe the children are our future."
And then there's the Yiddish proverb, "Nakhes fun kinder iz tayere fun gelt"--Joy from children is more precious than money.
Despite the fact that a middle-income family may spend $234,900 to raise a child born in 2011 to the age of 18, "Beybi H" is due in December. So, who is "Beybi H"? He/she is going to be my 6th "eynikl" (grandchild) and will be named after my late husband, Howard.
When I was first advised of the "vunderlekh" (wonderful) news, I recalled the Haiku from Eugenie Olson's book, "Pregnancy Haiku - Three Short Lines for Your Nine Long Months."
Gasp--it's positive!
Maybe just two more,
to be
absolutely sure
Now that my daugher-in-law is just about in her third month--another pregnancy Haiku:
Suspiciously thick
but not yet looking pregnant
First trimester fun
And all those unwanted details from
sisters, friends and Yoga students:
Thanks for your fun tale!
Ninety-seven hours of
back labor sounds great
And questions, questions, questions:
Where's my glow, you ask?
You try glowing right after
throwing up three times
And meeting "der politsyant"(policeman)
in Cos Cob, CT:
Sorry, officer
Speeding seemed preferable
to
peeing my pants
And the "chutzpah" (nerve) of all those
strangers who want to touch "der boykh"
(the belly)!
"Hands off my belly!
Next one to rub it gets a
swift kick in the shins.
And "der kholem"--the dream:
Had that dream again
Where I birthed a cantaloupe
Twelve pounds, two ounces
And those "greps" (belches/burps)
Stand back, all you boys
I can blow open a door
with my massive burps
And as the months progress, we'll be hearing:
Getting out of bed?
No problem--just follow my
fifteen simple steps
"der shpitol" (der hospital)
Tour of hospital
includes moms in hard labor
Yikes! What have I done?
And, finally, in late December, "zi vet zogn"
(she will say):
Gasp! I wet my pants
Nope, I'm wrong--my water broke
Here we go, baby!
Happy Infanticipating, Cynthia and Jonathan! Love you.
Mom
