LIFE IS “GUT” (GOOD)
A FEW STORIES AND A “DROSHE” (SERMON)

“LG” means “Life’s Good. It’s a backronym--not an acronym. LG electronics says,

“Life is more than the latest technology. It’s about the experiences technology creates. From TVs and home appliances to cell phones and computer products, LG delivers consumer electronics that allow you to embrace life and prepare for its greatest moments.”

In January 2009, LG was able to buy the domain name LG.com for a price reportedly to be more than $100 million, placing it among the companies who own their two letter domain name.

Are you familiar with the lyrics to Livingston Taylor’s song, “Life Is Good”? ...
And the boy turned and asks his old dad, He asks, “Are you glad for the kind of life you’ve lived? He says, “Life is good, spring is in the air, you’ve got bucks in your pocket and a little bit of Brills Cream in your hair. You know life is good and you’re proud of what you do.
...
Give it all to others. Come on now try.
Maybe there’s a reason for all what we do.
Give it all to others and it all comes back to you.

Rabbi Steven M. Fink, Temple Oheb Shalom, Baltimore, MD, gave a Yizkor semon on Sept. 14, 2013, which dealt with the topic: “Life is good.” He shared an incident that happened within his own family:

...In the last week of July, my 95 year old Aunt Esther, my mother’s sister, attempted suicide. When she did not answer the phone by the early afternoon, her children went to her home and discovered that she was unconscious. She left notes all over the house giving her children instructions as to which bills to pay, what books to return to the library, and what foods in the refrigerator should be taken home with them. Clearly, she had thought this out. She was rushed to the hospital where she was revived. My mother, who is very close to her sister, reflected upon Esther’s actions. My mother then added, “If I wanted to do it, I would do it right. But I would never do it because LIFE IS TOO GOOD.”

Life is too good. We wish that our loved ones had even a bit more time. No matter how old they were, their time was too short. We yearn to be with them, if just for a brief while. We want to see them smile, hear their laughter, and feel their hugs. We want to share just a bit more time, a little more of life. Life is good and we should treasure what we have as long as we can with those whom we love.

The rabbi ends the sermon by saying, “We should not be foolish or frivolous with our use of time we have. We must horde it, savor it, and relish it. Life is too good to waste. We need to do all we can to safeguard it. May it be written and inscribed in the Book of Life in this year of 5774.

Pastortrish’s Weblog posted a sermon on 4/22/13:

Several years ago I was able to connect with a college friend that I had not talked to in 15 years.

. The first thing he asked me was “how’s life?” I had to think about responding to that--how did I convey 15 years of life with all its ups and downs, with the joys and sorrows that had occurred.

. Finally I came up with the answer, “life is good.”

What does it mean to say that life is good?

And, finally, a short story adapted from Paul Harvey titled, “Don’t Forget What Really Matters”:

Carl Coleman was driving to work one morning when he bumped fenders with another motorist.

Both cars stopped, and the woman driving the other car got out to survey the damage.

She was distraught. It was her fault, she admitted, and hers was a new car, less than two days from the showroom. She dreaded facing her husband.

Coleman was sympathetic, but he had to pursue the exchange of license and registration data.

She reached into her glove compartment to retrieve the documents in an envelope.

On the first paper to tumble out, written in her husband’s distinctive hand, were these words:

“IN CASE OF ACCIDENT, REMEMBER, HONEY, IT’S YOU I LOVE, NOT THE CAR.”
