Title:
My Journey in Genealogy: Tips, How-To's & Rewards
patti maslinoffPresenter:
Patti Maslinoff
Description:
This two-hour multimedia presentation is jam-packed with resources, helpful hints, and motivation for genealogists primarily at the intermediate level, although Ms. Maslinoff says even beginners will find much of the information useful. She will share some of her insights, joys, and frustrations from 15 years of researching one's family history.

Included will be discussion of techniques she learned and developed for improving research, data collection, organization, and presentation, along with valuable tips that can only come from experience. Included will be a focus on how digital technology such as scanners can be valuable to a genealogist, as well as new software that can help make unreadable documents more legible. Using actual video and audio clips that she made in her own genealogical journey, she will discuss how to prepare for and conduct video-recorded oral history interviews. Also covered will be some of the more common mistakes made by beginners, and intermediate, even advanced, researchers.

Ms. Maslinoffs effusive enthusiasm and involvement with Jewish genealogy will be a motivation to all attendees. She teaches detective skills that will enable us to uncover the records, facts and other information about our families that generate those thrilling Aha moments that we treasure.

Registration:
Pre-registration required. Class is limited to 40 students

Workshop is open to JGSGW members only and there is no charge.

Davi Walders(click here for bio)
Description:
Davi Walders, writer and educator, will discuss what led her to research and write her moving collection of stories about women throughout Europe whose heroic acts fighting fascism during the Holocaust saved thousands of lives. She will read from her new book, Women Against Tyranny: Poems of Resistance During the Holocaust published this month by Clemson University Digital Press. The book tells the stories of Jewish, Christian, and Muslim women who resisted in many ways, from helping others escape, to parachuting into hostile territory, to providing translation support, and many other actions. She will share stories of women who survived and those who perished - women known as well as unknown. Women such as Dr. Rita Levi-Montalcini, Emilie Schindler, Baroness Germaine de Rothschild, and others are included. The session will address the question of why women's stories are so often unknown. Walders spent 15 years researching, traveling, and writing this collection. These womens stories take place in such countries as Germany, Poland, France, Yugoslavia, Denmark, Slovakia, Albania, Greece, and elsewhere. The session will include discussion.

Davi Walders is a writer and educator whose poetry and prose have appeared in more than 200 publications including CCAR Journal, Conservative Judaism, JOFA Journal, Judaism, Lilith, and Midstream. She received Hadassah of Greater Washington's Myrtle Wreath Award for her work at NIH and its Children's Inn. For additional biographical information, click here.

There will be a book signing at the conclusion of the program.
