Lots of news to report on the Jewish sports scene. October 30 proved to be an excellent date for baseball's Craig Breslow and basketball's Omri Casspi and Gal Mekel.
Baseball--The Boston Red Sox won the World Series, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals, 4 games to 2. Relief pitcher Craig Breslow, who had an excellent season, and playoffs on the mound, struggled in the Series. This is his second World Series championship with the Boston Red Sox, the first time coming in 2007.
Basketball--After a fine pre-season with their respective teams, both Israeli NBA representatives enjoyed victory in their first regular season games on Wed., October 30. The Dallas Mavericks grounded the Atlanta Hawks, 118-109 as Gal Mekel made a pair of free-throws for 2 points, grabbed 2 rebounds, and dished off 3 assists in 9 minutes off the bench. Omri Casspi nailed a pair of field goals for 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 20 minutes of playing time off the bench, as the Houston Rockets soared over the Charlotte Bobcats, 96-83.
Women's Golf--After a week of inactivity, Morgan Pressel's LPGA ranking slipped one place to 44th in the World.
Ice Hockey--Michael Cammalleri has scored 5 points in 5 games (3 goals and an assist) for the Calgary Flames this season, including a game-winning-goal in the Flames 5-2 victory over the Washington Capitals last week. Eric Nystrom has contributed 3 points (2 goals and an assist) in 12 games for the Nashville Predators. He has been assessed 21 penalty minutes this season.
Men's Tennis--After a week of inactivity, Dudi Sela's ATP ranking slipped one place to 69th in the World.
May they, and all the Jewish Jocks continue their winning ways as we get closer to the Thanksgiving / Hanukah season.
Women's Kayak--Jessica Fox of Australia won two gold medals--a team and an individual--in the 2013 World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic.
