Midway Through the Summer of 2013

Midway through the Summer, Jewish sports stars around the World have had much success on the playing fields in various venues. Here are some of the top players' accomplishments for your information and pride:

Baseball--San Diego Padres' starting pitcher Jason Marquis had a 9-5 won-lost record this season until being sidelined with an elbow injury. HIs career record (121-114) places him among the best Jewish Major Leaguers on the pitcher's mound. May he have a refuah shlayma and increase his winning record. Boston Red Sox' relief pitcher Craig Breslow has a 3-2 record this season in 37 game appearances, and has a respectable 2.54 earned-run-average thus far in 2013.

Boxing--On July 24, Russian-born Israeli Orthodox Rabbinical student Yuri Foreman won his third fight of the year. The 8-round bout, which he won by unanimous decision, was held in NY City's Roseland Ballroom. Foreman, a super welterweight and former World champion, has a career 31-2 won-lost record.

Golf--Morgan Pressel is currently ranked 51st on the LPGA circuit. In 2013, she has made the cut in 10 out of 15 events, with two top-10 performances and earnings of $267,099. Morgan has a scoring average of 72.156 per round, with a best score of 64 this year.

Tennis--Shahar Peer finished in 2nd place in a WTA tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan in the last week of July. She was ranked 109th in the World, with a
singles won-lost record of 23-21 and a doubles record of 7-8 this year. Peer has earnings of $194,442 in 20 events in 2013.

Maccabiah Games Results: Team Israel won both the men's and women's volleyball competitions which were held in Modi'in, city of the original Maccabees. Team USA, led by coach Brad Greenberg won the gold medal in men's basketball. In ten-pin bowling, an Israeli team won the ladies trios event, led by Tal Yifat, who pounded the pins for a 277 in the third game. She had a pinfall of 1263 (210.5 average) for her six games. Her scores were, as follows: 183, 191, 277, 176, 190, 246. Her teammates, Shir Azulay (1119) and Shahaf Antin (1065) combined for a team total of 3447, giving them a 191.50 average.

May they, and all the Jewish Jocks around the globe, continue to have a "hot" season this Summer as they make us proud of their accomplishments on the sports playing fields.
