Jewish Sports Extremes
Thursday 22 Adar 2, 5774 - March 24, 2014

Some people are into "Extreme Sports." There are many extremes among Jewish sports stars. Following are some of them FYI:

The long and short of it:

  • Omri Casspi, the first Israeli in the NBA, who plays forward for the Houston Rockets, is 6'9" (2.06 Meters).
  • Olympic gold medalist in gymnastics Aly Raisman (Team USA) is 5'2" (1.57 Meters).

  • Lightweight and Heavyweight: Aly Raisman weighs in at 115 pounds (52 Kg).
  • American football player Jeff Schwartz, who signed a 4 year deal to play for the NY Giants on March 12, is a robust 6'6" (1.98 Meters) and 340 lbs. (154.5 Kg).

Juniors and Seniors:

  • Jessica Fox (Australia) was just 18 years old when she won a silver medal in kayak in the 2012 London Olympics.
  • Aly Raisman, who is two and a half weeks older than Jessica, was also 18 when she won her Olympic medals (individual bronze on the balance beam and individual gold in the floor exercise, and team gold). She was also the first American woman to win a gold in the floor exercise.
  • Israeli basketball player Avishai Gordon is averaging 9.4 points, 4 assists and 3.2 rebounds in 32.8 minutes per game for 20 games this season with Galil Elyon in Israel's second league. The 36 year old Gordon is an excellent shooter. This season he's made 50% of his 2-point and 57.7% of his 3-point field goals, and 83.3% of his free throws. When asked about what he attributes his longevity on the court to, he replied, "it's 95% in the head."
  • Jeff Halpern is playing hockey in the NHL for the Phoenix Coyotes at age 37 (he'll turn 38 on May 3). He has 10 points (4 goals and 6 assists) in 56 games this season.
  • Bruce Fleisher plays golf on the Champions Tour and at age 65 1/2 he has made the cut in all three events he has played in 2014. He has a scoring average of 71.33 and has earned $15,865 in those three tournaments.

Lowest Earned-Run-Average: Boston Red Sox pitcher Craig Breslow had an excellent ERA of 1.81 in 61 game appearances in 2013. He struck out 33 batters and walked just 18 in 59 2/3 innings pitched. His won-loss record was 5-2 for the season.

Highest bowling scores: Israeli ten-pin bowler Or Aviram won the 2013 World Cup, and averaged 235 for his 45 games. Along the way, he had a pair of 299 games and a pair of perfect 300 games.
May they, and all the other "Modern Maccabees" of the sports playing fields continue to make us proud of their success.
