Only a week to go before Thanksgiving / Hanukkah. Many of the "modern Maccabees" of the sports playing fields are thankful for their recent performances in their various venues.

Basketball (NBA)--Gal Mekel has scored 43 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and dished off 28 assists in 11 games for the Dallas Mavericks. Omri Casspi has scored 87 points, grabbed 45 rebounds, and dished off 22 assists in 11 games for the Houston Rockets. On November 19, Casspi scored 5 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, and had a team-high 3 steals as the Rockets soared over the Boston Celtics 109-85 in Houston. The two Israelis' teams square off for the second time this season on November 20 in Dallas, and Houston is going into the game with a won-loss record of 8-4 and the Mavs have an 8-3 record.

Women's Golf--Morgan Pressel had a 66 in the second round of the Lorena Ochoa Invitational, and finished in 27th place for the event. She is currently ranked 45th in the World on the LPGA circuit, and has made the cut in 17 out of 23 events she has played in 2013, with earnings of $485,065 and a scoring average of 71.75.

Ice Hockey--There are many Jewish hockey players who have been having excellent seasons thus far in the USA and abroad. Following are the most productive of them thus far in the 2013-14 season. NHL--Michael Cammalleri has scored 13 points (9 goals and 4 assists) in 14 games for the Calgary Flames.

AHL--Jason Zucker has a total of 8 points (4 goals and 4 assists) and he has been assessed 45 penalty minutes in 12 games for the Iowa Wild. Carter Camper has 13 points (2 goals and 11 assists) in 15 games for the Providence Bruins.

Europe--Big (6'4", 225 lbs.) Adam Henrich has scored 38 points (12 goals, 26 assists) in 21 games, and his brother Michael Henrich has 19 points (7 goals, 12 assists) for the Coventry Blaze of the British Elite Ice Hockey League. Adam leads the Blaze in assists and points, and Michael is 4th on the team in points. Additionally, Adam is 2nd on the team with 56 penalty minutes. Brett Sterling, the shortest of the professional hockey players at 5"7" has been a big asset to his team, HV71 Jonkoping, of the Swedish Hockey League, with 9 points ( 5 goals and 4 assists) in 17 games. Jacob Micflikier has netted 7 points (4 goals and 3 assists) in 9 games for Lugano of the Swiss A hockey league. David Meckler has 23 points (8 goals and 15 assists) and a +16 rating through 22 games for Salzburg E.C. in Austria. Danny Richmond has 12 points (one goal and 11 assists) and 34 penalty minutes in 20 games for Munich EHC of the DEL (German Ice Hockey League). Evan Kaufmann has scored 16 points (8 goals and 8 assists) and a rating of +11 in 16 games for the Neurmberg Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers of the DEL.

May the "modern Maccabees" of the sports playing fields continue their success and make us proud of their accomplishments.
