Lots to report now on the Jewish Sports Scene
Basketball: Both Israeli NBA players have been positive factors in their respective teams' success thus far this season. Rookie guard Gal Mekel has scored 37 points (4.6 ppg avg.) and has dished out 25 assists (3.1 apg avg.) in 8 games for the Dallas Mavericks, who have a 5-3 won-loss record through Nov. 12. Forward Omri Casspi has scored 55 points (7.8 ppg avg.) and grabbed 35 rebounds (5 rpg avg.) in his 7 games for the Houston Rockets. The Rockets have a 4-4 record through Nov. 12.
Boxing : Student Rabbi Scores his 9th Knock-out!
First, a correction: In the previous article, it was reported that Yuri Foreman would be fighting Michael Oliveira on Nov 12. He actually fought against Javier Gomez.
Chabadnik Dmitriy "Star of David" Salita lost a ten-round bout against Gabriel Bracero on Nov 9 in Brooklyn. It was by unanimous decision that went the full ten rounds, as his opponent scored a lot of points in the 8th--10 rounds. On Nov 12, Russian / Israeli Rabbinical student Yuri Foreman recorded a resounding first-round knockout against Javier "Pelon" Gomez in their scheduled 8-round fight in FL. Salita's professional record stands at 35 wins, 2 losses, and one draw, with 18 knock-outs, and Foreman's record is 32 wins, 2 losses, one no-contest, and 9 knock-outs.
Ice Hockey (NHL)--Nashville Predators' Eric Nystrom has scored 5 points (4 goals and an assist) in 18 games this season. He has been assessed 21 penalty minutes. Calgary Flames' Michael Cammalleri has 11 points (8 goals and 3 assists) in 11 games, and only has 4 penalty minutes this season.
(DEL)--Evan Kaufmann has 14 points (6 goals and 8 assists) in 14 games with the Neurmberg Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers this season. He has 12 penalty minutes and has a +9 rating thus far this season.
