Jewish Jocks
9 December 2013

Well, Hanukah, the Festival of Lights, is behind us, but the "Modern Maccabees" of the sports playing fields are continuing to rack up points and victories.

Men's Basketball (NBA) On Nov 30, Dallas Mavericks' guard Gal Mekel had his first start of the season and scored 6 points and dished out 7 assists in 26 minutes of playing time. Though the Houston Rockets lost their last two games, forward Omri Casspi had a 13 point, 6 rebound performance in 30 minutes and a 14 point, 7 rebound outing in which he played 31 minutes on Dec 2 and 4 respectively. The Rockets' have a 13-7 won-loss record thus far this season, and Casspi, in his 5th NBA season, is averaging 9.4 points per game.

Women's Basketball--Elitzur Ramle has extended their winning streak and they now have a perfect 6-0 record this season in the women's top league in Israel. The former University of Toledo (OH) star Naama Shafir had an excellent 13 point, 9 rebound and 10 assist game in which she played 34 minutes on Dec 2.

Ice Hockey (NHL) Calgary Flames' Mike Cammalleri scored 14 points (10 goals and 4 assists) in his first 19 games this season. In his NHL career, he has 220 goals and 251 assists (471 total points) in 625 games. The most prolific Jewish NHL player was Mathieu Schneider, who scored 743 points (223 goals and 520 assists) in 1289 games. Schneider had a +66 rating and was assessed 1245 penalty minutes in his storied career. At this rate, Cammalleri should eclipse Scneider's goal total before the end of month.

May they, and all the Jewish Jocks around the World continue their winning ways.
